InterRegional for Strategic Analysis

InterRegional for Strategic Analysis published the first issue of its new specialized journal InterRegional Indicators, an irregular series on statistical indicators that aims to track key strategic shifts and political, economic, security, technological, and social factors, and to provide a forward-looking vision of regional and international dynamics.The first issue of the journal is entitled The UAE Environmental Achievement Index 2023, and examines UAE efforts in environmental and climate sectors. It measures 32 sub-indicators through 2022, and which have been tracked since UAE Vision 2021 was launched in 2010. The index uses 2010 as a benchmark to measure the effectiveness of these efforts, and provides forecasts for the index through 2030.The UAE Environmental Achievement Index is a combined quantitative metric that was developed using the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s Handbook on Constructing Composite Indicators. It is calculated as an average of four sub-indicators: climate change, biodiversity, maintaining a clean and healthy environment, and environmental awareness and action.The index’s lower bound is zero. If environmental efforts continue at the same level as in 2010, then the index will be at 100 points. If the index is above 100 points this indicates achievement in the environment and climate sector relative to 2010. If the number falls below 100, environment efforts have fallen below the benchmark level.The publication examines the outcomes of the main indicator and sub-indicators from 2010-2022. The last chapter of the issue also provides forecasts for the main indicator and sub-indicators through 2030, assuming a scenario in which UAE efforts in the environmental sector continue at the current pace.
