China and the United States reached a new trade agreement on May 11, 2025, marking a pivotal step toward resolving one of the world's most serious economic crises: the escalation of the tariff war between the two nations since President Donald Trump returned to office last January. This agreement, the result of marathon negotiations held in Geneva, represents a temporary truce lasting 90 days, which includes a partial suspension and reduction of punitive tariffs in a decisive effort to alleviate the tensions that have shaken the global economy. Under the agreement, the United States will reduce its tariffs on Chinese imports to 30%, down from the previous 145%, while China will lower its tariffs on American goods to 10%, down from 125%.

What Are the Implications of the China-U.S. Trade Agreement?

A Temporary Truce:

 During her weekly press conference on 22 November 2023, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused the United States (US) Ambassador to Bangladesh, Peter Haas, of interfering in the domestic affairs of Bangladesh, which is set to hold parliamentary elections on 7 January 2024. The accusations came as Moscow and Washington compete to boost their influence in the South Asian country, where Zakharova said the US ambassador met with a high-level representative of the local opposition in late October. She said the two had discussed plans to organize mass protests against the Bangladeshi government, since 2009 headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has not been on good terms with Washington regarding the issue of human rights and detention. Bangladesh has been seeing political unrest since October, with violence and blockades throughout November, leading to deaths across the country and the arrest of several opposition leaders.

Eight months after the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, Turkey, a NATO member, has emerged as the biggest swing player in this war, because of its close ties with both Russia and Ukraine and its pursuit of balanced relationships with both sides. In particular, its participation in the war comes from multiple sectors, including security cooperation with Ukraine, diplomatic mediation between Moscow and Kyiv, and energy cooperation with Russia. This approach has given Ankara a major opportunity to achieve the greatest gains possible from the war, while giving the West an important lesson on how to deal with Russia more effectively.
